The Journey in Sound series returns after a 2 year hiatus with a timely benefit for Ukraine at the beautiful Swedenborg Chapel in Cambridge. As was the case before with this series, diversity will be on display with musicians from a number of different styles and of national origins all coming together to help the Ukrainian people deal with the brutal tragedy and suffering inflicted by a immoral and brutal tyrant from its bordering country.
Julian Kytasty, one of the world’s premier players of the bandura, a lute-harp which is Ukraine’s national instrument, will headline. Also performing will be the extraordinary genre-bending violinist Yaeko Miranda Elmaleh with her long-time cohorts accordionist Michael McLaughlin and percussionist Grant Smith. In addition, the gifted South African jazz pianist Witness Matlou will perform pieces dedicated to the struggles in Ukraine both solo and in duo with Iranian kamancheh player Payam Yousef. I am also blessed to have Tennessee-born guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Joseph Allred contribute some pieces at the beginning of the event
You will also hear the beautiful voices of three Ukrainian women who currently attend Berklee … Valeriia Vouk (Odessa), Lera Shemi (Kyiv) and Svieta Biliaskovska (Lviv).
Olga Gerasymiv, a Lviv native who is co-hosting the event, will be selling art for her project, ART AID for UKRAINE.
The two organizations that will be receiving donations at the event are World Central Kitchen, an organization that provides meals to communities impacted by national disasters and during prolonged humanitarian crises, and Razom for Ukraine. Razom means “together” in Ukrainian and the organization provides critical medical supplies for the besieged nation and amplifies the voices of Ukrainians.
